Indie review: Unavowed

A not so long ago normal human finds itself in the middle of the hidden face of our world, were magic and monster are real. In the midst of all this it can only wonder, what did my demon do this time?

Unavowed is a point and click game made by Wadjet Eye Games where we take control of a recently exorcised victim of demon possession. After our player avatar is rescue we join our saviors and their group, the titular unavowed, to protect the city from further void activity and fix the damages our demon has done.
As a point and click game, unavowed, is more focused in it’s story and world building than it’s puzzles. In the difficulty spectrum for this type of games it would most likely be on the easy end of it. I never found myself looking at a guide as the solutions weren’t as crazy or convoluted as other games in the genre.

To not keep the gameplay to stale besides the use object A on B puzzles there are some riddles that aren't too hard either but were very entertaining to solve. This included learning a password by hearing about the person or solving a chinese poem about dragons.
What made me love this game was it’s world and characters. In its short time it managed to build an interesting world were i knew there was more to it than i could see. This was helped by the likeable and fully voiced cast of characters. Although not everyone's voices were on the same level of talent or sound quality i never find it anyong or immersion breaking.
This games art is magnificent, backgrounds and some close up shots look fantastic while also letting the pixelart characters blend into the world perfectly

The main cast consist of a genie, his half human daughter, a fire mage, a medium and his sidekick ghost and a disgraced police officer. Everyone has its own story and problems but they can joke around or get angry and i like them because they felt like people. You can get most of their backstory through a robotic dialogue trees but their personalities shine on their comments about a mission or their interactions with the world and each other.
Now even though i loved the world and characters it wasn’t that that originally attracted me to the game. What made me actually play the game was because it claim to be an RPG and although true is as simple as it can get. One can chose the background and gender of the player avatar along with it’s responses, who of the unavowed members we take on missions and how we resolve them.

This RPG mechanics give the game some replayability, as i mention before i love how the characters interact so seeing different teams in different mission was very interesting. Also this mechanics serve to the game story giving it a nice twist that i didn’t saw coming but it wasn’t enough. Personally with how much i like the world and characters would have prefered a more lineal and robust story.
To conclude i would highly recommend unavowed, good narrative, good art and an excellent world are worth more than its price tag.
